This season is all about the more oversized boxy knits. There’s nothing better than an oversized jumper and I love how versatile they are!
I recall many colourful, 90s knits in my childhood wardrobe. Some were new and some were handed down to me from my sisters. My mum has been knitting me jumpers since she realised she had fallen pregnant with me and my late Gran knitted for all us Carey kids too. My mum, in fact, still knits and she has her own Etsy store! She’s a proverbial knitting machine.
Back in the 90s, knitted jumpers may have been loosely on-trend, but my friends did not think my handmade creations were. When you’re a kid, what you wear and how others perceive you is all you really have, so you quickly become embarrassed if you’re perceived as anything but cool. It didn’t matter that love and countless hours had been poured into the making of a unique, fabulous creation, we were children, so we didn’t understand.
In hindsight, my Mum and Gran’s creation were kickass. They deserve to be on a goddamn runway.
Fast-forward to 2016 and knitwear is stronger than ever. I own nearly as many jumpers as I do pairs of denim jeans. But definitely not shoes. Having now moved on from my colourful yarn heyday, I now much prefer grey, beige, white and navy. These colours go with everything, so it means I will get guaranteed wear out of them, season to season.
Forever New has some richly textured, perfectly minimal knitwear this season, as well as some really great coat and jacket options too.
Lately, my “go-to” outfit combination has been an oversized knit and a skirt (trench/coat optional at the moment!) I for one love a look that isn’t ‘too perfect’. I also love this look with sneakers of course! But that definitely goes without saying.
